Summary: The work of Leadership

Another summary for an article from Harvard Business Review — “The work of leadership, by Ronald A. Heigetz and Donald L.Laurie”.

What is the real work of leaders? Providing all the right answers? No it is asking all the right questions.

Solving all the problems yourself? No. It is is supporting others while they do.

There are six fundamental principles for leading adaptive work.

  1. Get on the balcony.
  2. Identify the adaptive challenge.
  3. Regulate the distress caused by the adaptive challenges.
  4. Maintain disciplined attention.
  5. Give the work back to the people
  6. Protect voices of leadership from below.
