Restore IIS when IIS admin fails to start…

When one of my windows engineers re-patched the redundant power cord for an ESX server, PRD IIS in VM instance got corrupted (not sure if it is ESX bug). The problem was IIS server can not start because IIS admin service fails due to following error

“The IIS Admin Service service terminated with service-specific error 2148073478 (0×80090006)”.

The windows engineer tried re-installed IIS service, but all application queues and website configurations are gone, This is a major impacts to business.

Buying monkeys — how stock works

Do’s and Dont’s when working with vendor engineers

This is very useful reference table when working with engineers from outsourcer. I copied from an internal training document.

Don’t: Do:
Provide training that is generic to the marketplace (i.e., MS Office applications, ergonomics, or privacy) or is a pre-specified skill requirement. Provide training that is specific to the company and is necessary to successfully fulfill responsibilities.
Provide letters of recommendation. Suggest that vendor employees request recommendations from the vendor company.
Invite vendor employees to staff meetings that are focused on team-building, development, or company HR information. Invite vendor employees to meetings with content directly related to their work responsibilities.
Set the hours of work for individual vendor employees. Specify to the vendor the requirements for deadlines or hours of coverage, and allow vendor to determine who and how to meet those requirements.
Discuss performance issues or concerns relating to vendor employees. Discuss negative performance feedback directly and in a timely manner with vendor management.
Give gift checks, prizes or awards to vendor employees. Inform the vendor management so that they may provide award or prize according to their recognition policy.

Common questions CxO will ask for a IT infra proposal

Today I spent more than 60 minutes discussing with local management for a new costly infra project. This project was not budgeted this year due to some internal reasons last year. Therefore, it was challenging for me to secure the funding.

Anyway, as I shared before, CxO focuses mainly on three aspect: Strategy, value and cost. Below is a list of questions they have challenged me for dozens of times in the past.

ZT: Tibet – the truth

This is a wonderful piece of documentary produced by a westerner. Important for all, especially people of Asia to know the real history of Tibet/China . Sad to say even our western media ( newspaper, CNA ) still churns out Western propaganda and distorted truths on this subject. Seems like the “colonial mentality” still exists among many in western society.
