Search by “is:unread” and it returns all unread mails (but only 20
mails per page). The old tip of setting a label with name “Unread” has
been blocked by google.

12000 mails to Gmail
After more than 10 hours of transfer, my 12000 mails from 2002 till
now have been moved to Gmail and organzied as about 7000 conversations.
The mails take about 640MB out of the 2000GB available space. The only
thing I have not happy with Gmail is that it organize mails by its
delivery time (not sent time), so my redirected old mails appear as if
they were new mails, even the sent time is corrected reserved. Hope
Gmail will add “sort by sent time” option in the future.
Total webmail with Gmail
One step to live without a laptop is to use webmail as more as
possbile, so I am moving my 900MB mail achives from local disk, now
nevertheless not so reliable, to google’s gmail, which provides a
nearly unlimited space (2GB). The migration is a little tedious.
Laptop revivied in a PowerMac
As the data image has been rescued after 6 days of recovery, I restored
the image file to a PowerMac G5, which I did not use frequently in the
past. After booting from a CD and specify new booting volume as the one
I just restored, my entire content of
the laptop revived in the desktop without any data lost. Great. So now
I can work with this desktop as if it is my laptop, where the only
difference is I can not move it.
Data is back !! Wo…
It is incrediable, but my data is back! After six days of super slow data recovery, the two disk volumes are copied with "dd" to two image file. After mounting the images (dmg file) focely with command "sudo hdiutil attach laptop_disk2.dmg", it appears in the new system and looks like all data are integrate. Woo….

Super slow recovery
As recorded in my last blog on rescuing data from the corrupted hard
disk, the data recovery started last Friday 17:00. After about 90 hours
tilll now (Tuesday 13:00PM), only 21GB data were copied by "dd".
It is incrediably slow as data is transferred at only 50KB/s (almost
the 512KB ADSL modem’s speed). To recover my data volume (thank god, I
partitioned the disk), it will take another 2-3 days… The worst
hardware disaster of my life.
